Compost

I've been working on both small and medium scale compost systems in Africa, USA, and Latin America since 2006.   The background picture is the compost I manage in Santo Domingo since about November 2021.   This is a bin of finished compost and is curing.

This is my youtube playlist of compost related videos.  7 videos from around 2021 to present day

Composting Sargasso - May 2023

This is a trial begun May 2023 to determine to what extent I can add sargassum to the current compost system I have at my home in Santo Domingo.  I will get more sargassum but I found composting sargassum alone (w/o mixing into my food waste wasn't breaking down).  I have since been adding it to my current method including food waste and it breaks down in 4-6 weeks along with the food waste.

Vermiculture 2012 - NWelch.pptx

This was a method for composting I used while living in group housing in Washington DC from 2009 to 2012.  Funniest thing someone said was, "you can't keep worms outside in DC, they'll freeze".  To which I replied, "they live outside".  In all fairness, they do need to be shielded from open freezing temperatures which can freeze and kill them.

Common Good Compost 2012 NWelch.pptx

I used to manage a 300-lb per week modified wind-row composting set up also in Washington DC, when I used to volunteer with Common Good City Farm also from about 2009-2012.
